As the snow falls and the church bells ring out, Angeline’s family find themselves in a heart breaking situation…
The story begins on Christmas eve when Angeline Barker’s father has taken the family carol singing on the streets. It’s snowing heavily and Angeline’s mother, a former musical hall star, is ill with a persistent cough. Being forced to sing on the streets is not what the children want to do because they realise any takings will go straight into their father’s pockets and not into the family coffers!
As if things aren’t bad enough, Bertie Barker chooses to abandon his family for the charms of a young barmaid at the local pub that very afternoon, leaving them all in dire straits over the festive season.
Will the family manage to survive without being forced onto the streets or into the confines of the local workhouse?
