T.M. Logan Bio
Born in Berkshire, Tim Utton, or T.M Logan, grew up in Reading and was a bookworm from a young age. He studied a Bachelor’s degree in History at Westfield College (part of the University of London) and then went on to complete a postgrad at Cardiff University.
Utton always knew that he wanted to write, so journalism was a natural progression; he spent five years as a reporter and then education correspondent at the Nottingham Evening Post. He then moved to London and became the Science Reporter at the Daily Mail. This saw him covering topics such as new technology, the environment, space, genetics, health and medicine. While Utton enjoyed being a national newspaper journalist, the job didn’t leave a lot of time for his other interest – writing thrillers.
Tim Utton’s career then took him back to the East Midlands, working for the University of Nottingham as a press officer. This gave him time in the evenings and weekends to write fiction. Whether he had a spare half hour on a train or at his children’s swimming lessons, or more time at home, he wrote.
His first novel, Lies, was published in January 2017 after he had been able to secure representation. It wasn’t long after his book was published as an e-book, he found out his job as deputy director at the university’s communications team was being made redundant. It was this change that gave Tim the chance to take the plunge into writing full-time.
Utton writes under the pseudonym T.M Logan – his agent and publisher floated the idea of a pen name as ‘Utton’ is easily misspelt and often forgotten.
When Utton isn’t writing, he spends his spare time playing tennis and you can often find him supporting the Nottingham Panthers ice hockey team.
Today, Tim and his wife live in Nottinghamshire, and he spends his writing time in a cabin in the corner of his garden.
Richard and Judy Book Club pick
Utton has had two Richard and Judy Book Club picks in recent years. The Holiday went on to spend ten weeks in the Sunday Times paperback Top 10, and hit the #1 spot on Amazon Kindle, Apple iBooks and Kobo after it has featured in the book club picks. The Daughter was also selected in the Richard and Judy Book Club in 2025
Since being published, The Holiday has been made into a four-part TV drama starring Jill Halfpenny and Owen McDonnell.
